While I’ve stayed at the classy E&O Hotel and even the laidback Lone Pines at Batu Feringgi, I must admit I really enjoyed my stay recently at the Northam All Suites in Penang. The staff were friendly and checking in or out was as smooth as smooth can be. The best part of staying there was that it was pretty cheap even though it was without breakfast. Well who needs hotel breakfasts when you’re in Penang right? Just step outside and there’s a whole world of tantilising tastes waiting for you!

Besides being centrally located near Gurney Plaza and Gurney Drive, this hotel has one of the more modern look and feel to it all. Besides having internet connection to the room, it has what I love the most….a bathtub. Oh wait a minute it’s not just a normal bathtub. It’s a Jacussi! and it’s located in the “room” itself. You can be laying there in the tub and watching TV at the same time!

Apart from the relaxing jacussi, we also managed to get a room with a frontal view to the sea! Very nice indeed! I think this is one of the better Business Hotels I’ve been to coming in second just behind the Business Suite that I experienced in Hilton KL. The cost however was much cheaper here at the Northam… approx 1/4 the price! Of course each has their own advantages and you do get what you pay for.

For all of you who are craving for Malaysian food, allow me to introduce the Home made Popiah prepared by my Aunty Angeline at her home. I’ll have to say that her popiah’s are the best that I have tested and “made” ever in my entire life. All the ingredients are freshly prepared and the best part is that you get to choose whatever ingredients you like when compiling your own customised POPIAH. You can make vegetarian popiahs, or meaty popiahs, some full of sweet sauce, and even ones which are spicy full of chilly sauce. Whatever it is… I’m sure you’re salivating now.

As you can see from the pictures below, some of the ingredients include (but are not limited to); tofu cubes, shredded cucumber, turnip (Sengkuang?), diced long beans, bean sprouts, garlic, peanuts, dried chinese wax sausages, fried shallots, sweet sauce, super hot chilly sauce, & etc…

Below is a picture of some of the ingredients laid out on the popiah skin ready to be rolled. Sometimes the popiah will not roll too neatly.. but that normally is just a sign of greediness when you overload the popiah with goodies. After all, can you blame us for overloading it when everything tastes so yummy ?

This dish might look simple but the ingredients are delicious which I’m sure it takes a lot of time and patience to prepare. This blog entry is dedicated to Aunty Angeline who so graciously invite us over for super delicious Popiahs every now and then… thanks…. when’s the next one?

Sorry the pictures are a bit blur… I took the pictures with my phone’s built-in camera.

Have you ever wondered why our minister said it was a “win win” situation when the International Court of Justice announced that Pulau Batu Putih “Pedra Branca” (which is large enough to house a lighthouse and more) now rightfully belongs to Singapore while we were awarded the few clumps of rocks (Middle Rocks) which are supposedly only visible only during low tide?

What in the world are we going to do with the few clump of rocks? Apparantly the fight for the rightful ownership affects not only the land on which they stand but also the surrounding waters (for the fishermen) and also the airspace above and over the “islands”. So based on these reasons, perhaps the win win situation is true but then again, based on history, The land actually belonged to Johor but because Singapore has been running a lighthouse there for the past god knows 150 yrs or so, they now have rightful ownership to the land. I guess Johor just waited too long (till 1980) to make the claim while doing their revised maps.

Personally, I hope this outcome will not affect out relationship with Singapore, affect our national security in anyway. I’m also wondering, is there a possibility of actually doing landfill around the area to build up an island on the existing structure of the middle rocks? That’ll be really cool don’t you think? I wonder how deep are the waters around that area…

Fact: Middle Rocks and South Ledge are two maritime features to the south of Pedra Branca. Middle Rocks consists of two clusters of rocks situated 0.6 nautical miles south of Pedra Branca.

South Ledge is a low-tide elevation (in other words, it is submerged at high tide) further south, 2.1 nautical miles, of Pedra Branca.

I got Mc Donald’s entry coupon about a week or so ago and we finally got the chance to trot into Bangsar Mc Donalds to see if May Lee could actually complete the slogan within 4 seconds. The reason why it took us so long to participate is because the competition time is only from 3 - 8pm daily during off-peak times which did not coincide with our free time.

Upon announcing to the person at the purchasing counter that we wanted to take part, we were asked to proceed to a special counter where a staff came by with a stop-watch! Three, Two, One… GO announced the staff… *tic*tic*tic… the stop watched was started. And May Lee went on with the chant…

“Two All-Beef Patties,
Special Sauce, Lettuce,
Cheese, Pickles, Onions
On A Sesame Seed Bun!”

STOP!!!! .. the verdict? Well.. the staff announced “Congratulations!… you did it”. Curious ol me asked her what the timing was…. and we were told she completed the chant in 3.19 seconds! Woo Hoo.. you go girl!

Basically, if you don’t stutter, I’m sure you will be able to complete it. But as for me.. I’ll probably choke on the words… somehow I don’t think I have clam nerves like May Lee. And yes… thanks dear… the Big Mac was delicious. Thanks for sharing…

During our last two trips to Penang, I brought along our Garmin Nuvi 250 GPS assist in navigating around Penang. Actually when I was offered to use the unit, I declined, but after much thought, I decided to bring it along. No harm trying it out right?

After trying it out first hand in a place I know little about, I found the Garmin GPS most helpful. My brother-in-law commented that we drove around like locals via the shortcuts and small lanes. I must say, the GPS made me feel comfortable and sure of where I was and where I was going. It had very little faults so I guess the map that I had in the unit was pretty much up-to-date. However I decided to surf the internet and managed to update the GPS’s software as well as load up free maps of Sydney (Australia) to see how the system would adapt. I didn’t manage to get the unit to “Speak Out” the directions during the simulation drive around Sydney. Perhaps its coz I didn’t have the needed data files? Perhaps someone could point this out to me since I am very new at this and am just learning how the GPS works and what files are needed for proper navigation. So far, I managed to find out that there are various files; the MAP itself, the POIs (Point of Interests) and perhaps the NAVIGATION file (which brings out the audio). This last part I am not really sure though as I have mentioned.

All in all, I think the GPS is a good buy and a very useful tool to have. I would recommend it to any one who drives a lot, and those who like exploring places and roads. You will never lose your way again… that’s until you lose satellite connection. If that happens, you will need to use your girl instincts (i.e. ask for directions!)

Some of the places which I used the GPS to find: Komtar, Lone Pine Hotel, E&O Hotel, Ocean Green Restaurant, Swatow Lane, Penang Hill, Botanical Gardens, Snake Temple, Penang Bridge, Gurney Drive/Plaza & loads more.

Just the other night, we had to make a visit to the emergency ward after the doctor at the clinic near our house told us she can’t do anything for us and need to refer us to a specialist at the hospital. So she wrote us a letter and we zoomed off to Pantai to be admitted and checked out.

We did have to wait close to an hour before we got our needed “urgent” attention. But as they are based on a Triage System, our little case of “I feel a little bone stuck in my throat” seems pretty trivial as compared to a man who got carried out into the emergency ward after having a fit just outside the hospital while riding his bike. He was shouting for dear life.. but then again he had apparantly busted his oral cavity area when he fell off his bike.

Anyway back to our emergency case…. well… the doctor checked May Lee out and could not find a bone. Of course during that time, she was resisting the dreaded tongue depressor. Well.. so much for having a little sambal for lunch.
