Maxis lucky number - 888

As I was at KLCC for lunch on Monday 30th October 2006, I went to Maxis Center after lunch to check with them how to set my APN (Access Point Name) into my phone so that I can send posts (which was successfully done on Monday itself through sheer determination) via MMS to my blog.

There were 14 persons ahead of me and I had to wait approximately 30 mins or more to get to my turn. All I knew was that I had enough time to go down to the lower level’s toilet (where you don’t have to pay) at the Center Court and walk back up and stand around and wait till my legs grew tired. When it came up to my turn… I asked the staff there how I could set my phone up. He did some keying in onto my phone… then half way decided to give up and asked me to type in the Server Address to my phone myself (talk about good customer service eh) and decided to send off an email address to the URL. I’m like thinking to myself… what in the world are you doing? He finally gave up and asked me to call their Data Center which had a 1800 number. All this testing and all was completed within 5 mins or less. Now what in the world was I doing waiting in line for so long just to have someone try their “luck” in sending off a message when he apparantly did not even know what he was doing?

Anyway I managed to call the 1800 number…. and a person called Jenny attended to me. All she could do was give me instructions on how to set up my GPRS and MMS settings on my Nokie phone. I wouldn’t say the information was useless because even though the instructions were not specific enough, talking to her made me aware of certain settings and possibility on the phone. Anyway I managed to twiddle with my phone and got the MMS sending to work! So thanks a lot Jenny. I owe you one and perhaps you also help saved many hours of my precious time.

So what’s the deal? Well… the whole point of this post (DUH… talk about long windedness) was that I got a waiting number slip (which I duly scribbled all over it while waiting and also while talking to Jenny) with the special number 888 ! Yes isn’t that the loveliest number you have ever seen? If you decide to go buy 3D or 4D with it and you happen to win, do share some of the winnings with me ok?

Here’s a picture of the Winning Number! hehe

SMS Forwarding to Email

You have received the following Message From WebSMS2u.com SMS Forwarding ServiceTime: 2006-11-0109:06:22
From: 6012xxxxxxx
Text: THIS IS HOW YOUR POSTING WILL LOOK LIKE YOU ARE NOT A REGISTERED USER. THE SYSTEM WILL TAG YOUR SMS AND SEND IT TO THE EMAIL PLUGIN
MessageID: 67601682
Shortcode: 32355
NOTICE: To stop receiving messages to your Email Address, you are advised to log into your WebSMS2u Account and change Email Address for the forwarding of received SMS Messages. If you believe you are not the intended recipient, then please forward this email to admin@websms2u.com so that we can take further action.

The above is a sample of how the WebSMS2u Forward to Email Feature + WordPress (wp-mail.php) will look.

How does it work?

If you send a message to me by typing SMS OPP and send it to 32355, a copy of your message will be forwarded to my predefined forwarding email a/c in WebSMS2u.com. Once the wp-mail.php or any similar plugins are run. The email message is then grabbed from the email account and posted onto the blog here. As you can see the sender’s phone number is automatically grabbed from the sender so the messages will have to be edited if you don’t want the numbers to show. Don’t worry, I will edit the numbers off so for privacy reasons.

What are the requirements?

If you want to test this feature on on my BLOG then you need the following:

  1. Ensure you are a Malaysian Handphone User
  2. If you are NOT a Malaysian Handphone User, you need to configure your SMSC into your phone to use any Malaysian Mobile Operator (see below on the example settings for Maxis)
  3. Send a message to me by sending to SMS OPP [MESSAGE].
    • Example: SMS OPP Hi how are you? This is a test message from Mr. Pinkie.
  4. Send the Message to 32355
  5. Wait for your message to be approved. Once approved, you should see it on the blog under Mobile Entries Category

COSTS NOTE: WebSMS2u.com charges RM0.30 per messages sent through the system. WebSMS2u.com also supports re-forwarding to an alternative mobile number (which is not activated in my case) so that I can be notified via my phone of incoming messages. Reforwarding of Messages will cost additional (ranges from RM0.11 to RM0.145 depending on how much you purchase the credits from)

If you want this feature for your wordpress a/c then you need the following:

  1. WordPress (and perhaps it will work for other email blogs too)
  2. Account with WebSMS2u.com
  3. Set up WebSMS2u.com to send copies of received messages to an Email
  4. Get your wp-mail.php or similar plugin to grab the emails and post them onto your blog

Optional: You can also use the wp-websms2u.php hack/plugin and get WebSMS2u.com to automatically connect to the script to automatically check, authenticate users and insert the SMS Content into your posts without having to go through forwarding to Email. - You will need to be hosting your own blog or find a wordpress blog that allows you to insert scripts/plugins.

Example Maxis Malaysia SMSC Settings - (Used to configure your phone only if you do not have a Malaysian Telco Line)

Message Center Number: +60120000015
Messages sent via: Text
Message Validity: Maximum Time
Default recipient number: (not defined)
Delivery Reports: No
Use GPRS: No
Reply via same centre: No

POSTING BY SMS

THIS IS SO AWESOME. THIS POSTING WORKS!

The above sentence was posted via SMS by using the WebSMS2u.com SMS Inbox Forwarding service to my script here on WordPress!

How does it work? - All I had to do was send an SMS to 32355 which wrote “SMS OPP (Posting by SMS) This is so awesome. This posting works!

The forwarding engine at WebSMS2u.com identifies the message as belonging to my account (identifier being the word ‘OPP), and forwards the real content portion “(Posting by SMS) This is so awesome. This posting works!” to my script here. The script URL is up to me to set in my OPP WebSMS2u Account Manager but it basically points to my script here. Or it can be pointed elsewhere if needed for other purposes.

The wp-websms2u.php script sitting on Ourplaypen.com then which then breaks down the mesage into Subject and Text and enters the entry into my posts automatically.

The subject / category portion is determined by the words inbetween the (brackets) and the rest of the text following that is entered as text.

I have set the authentication to check against my userlist here so that only registered users are able to perform posts to my blog.

Do you want to MMS to this blog?

If you wish to MMS to my blog there are a few settings you need to do to your phone. I’m not too well versed with all the phones out there so I’ll just give you the basics as to what needs to be done.

First of all you need to set the MMS Settings on your phone:

  1. GPRS Setting will still be going out via your mobile operator (so you can leave that alone)
  2. You will need to add a new MMS setting to your phone to use my MMS server instead of that of your Mobile Operator. So proceed to your settings/ configuration and add a new Multimedia Message setting via Personal Configuration. The setting details are as per below:
    • Account Name: Ourplaypen MMS
    • Server Address: http://www.ourplaypen.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-mms/wp-mms-server.php
    • Use Preferred Access Point: Yes (However if it does not work then set to ‘No’ and use the following settings)
      • Access Point Settings (this setting should be that of your Telco Provider. In this example I will be using Maxis Malaysia Settings):
        • Proxy: disabled
        • Bearer Settings:
          • GPRS Access Point: net
          • Authentication Type: Normal
          • Username: maxis
          • Password: wap
  3. Once the above configuration is done, go to your Message Settings (MMS) and go to the Configuration Settings to select the newly set up account (named as Ourplaypen MMS, as per above in Point No.2)

Phew… that was quite a bit of work huh? Well you only have to do the above once and it will be set on your phone for life… until you decide to delete the settings or until you lose your phone ;)

To Post a Blog:

  1. Compose a normal MMS as you would.
  2. You can send pure text or a combination of text and images or sound.
  3. Once you are done composing your message, send the message to the number: 888
  4. Your message will then be queued for approval on the blog.

Please refrain from sending me junk postings or advertisements because I’ll simply delete them. Please also give some sort of identification as to who you are so that I can contact you if necessary. I might find your posting interesting and decide to get in touch with you.

MMS Post Blog a Success!

EDITOR’S NOTE: There used to be a picture here of a MAY LEE infront of a Fun Fair Entrance but it was accidentally deleted and lost when I did an update from WordPress Version2.0.x to Version 2.1

This posting has been sent in via my mobile phone through Maxis MMS system. As you can see, it works and I am truly happy and amazed. This is truly a good learning experience as to the ins and outs of sending MMS from phone to any page on the internet.

Inverted Flat Spin Rush!

I tried flat spinning my Harmon Rocket the other day and boy what a rush it was…. Perhaps I was enjoying the inverted spin so much that I forgot what altitude I was at. By the time I was willing to let go of the sticks to recover from the spin, I found out that it was a little too low for comfort. Luckily I managed to get my orientation right after a while and pulled the plane out of the dive.

I think I’m going to be attempting some snap rolls on the next flight… but I’m still worried that the horizontal stabiliser might break off. I haven’t braced it yet as advised by other sites out there and my continuous checking on the surface shows that its still as sturdy as ever. I wonder how much abuse I can actually throw at it before it breaks off. High speed passes have shown that the tail holds on pretty firmly. I haven’t tried a high speed vertival diving positive or negative full pull up yet. If it survives a dozen of those, I’m sure it’ll survive any snap rolls I throw at it….

Harmon Rocket III

I did a run in of my Harmon Rocket III today. Engine ran well… Engine is a Super Tiger 45. Note to self… gotta make sure the engine is totally reliable before making maiden flight. Need to brace the tail as well…. How do you control a plane without a horizontal Stabiliser? Oh gosh… well anyway here’s a pic of my ROCKET

?Harmon Rocket

Here’s an account of my maiden flight on my Seagull Models HARMON ROCKET III
My Harmon Rocket had its maiden flight on 16 Aug 2006. I would say overall things went well. It took at least 180oz of weight on the nose to get the plane balanced. The engine which was a Super Tiger 45 ABC took a little time to tune as the high speed needle valve had to be taken out each time the cowling comes out. I also managed to blow a glow plug which had to be changed before we could fire the engine up again. Having checked all the control surfaces for correct movements, I taxied out and took advice from my flying buddies to use the entire runway for initial takeoff just incase the engine quit on me.??

The rotatation process went without fail, I throttled up and?the rocket tracked straight down?without much need for direction correction. I held?a little up elevator during the initial rollout to ensure an authoritative?tail wheel.?A couple of seconds later, the rocket was in the air with a positive climb out.

At height, I trimmed it with just a couple of right aileron clicks and a couple of up elevator clicks. After that the bird was tracking as though it was on rails. I would have to say that this is one of my recently built planes which tracked so well with so little need for trimming.

I took the plane for a couple of turns, a couple of low passes and a vertical climb out. Again the plane tracked as though it was on rails. It had the stability of the larger birds. It didn’t look as though it was affected by?wind like how?smaller electrics are. I would have to say the Super Tiger isnt as powerful as how a four stroker would be. The vertical climb out did peak after a while instead of going unlimited vertical. I was using a 11×6?Master Airscrew for the task.

THE FAILURE: After having flown for approximately 2-3 minutes now, the throttle decided not to respond to my controls. Apparantly the throttle barrel jammed and I no longer had throttle control. Warnings of an impending flame out, dead stick and possible crash was broadcasted out. I flew it around for another 5 minutes or so before the engine decide to starve on the emptied fuel tank (Not too sure how large it is but its the square one provided by the manufacturer). I was surprised how easy it was to bring the bird down on a dead stick. I made up downleg turns in plenty of time to line the rocket with?the runway. I had an initial bounce as I came in slightly hot just incase I didnt make the runway. On the bounce the elevator control was released and then reapplied just before the bird touched the ground again… and what do you know…. it made a perfectly flared and soft landing. Not too bad for an initial flight with no previous experience on the handling of the plane eh ?

?UNTESTED CHANGES DONE AFTER MAIDEN FLIGHT: I have since taken out 24oz of weight from the nose (while still keeping within the maximum boundaries of the CG) in hope of reducing the need to have the up trim on the elevator. That would also make the plane lighter and with?tail slightly heavier for a more responsive elevator. Hopefully with the reduced stress on the elevator, the stabiliser will also stay in place rather than fail during high speed passes as reported by other owners of this plane in forums.
